BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Down nine points at halftime, the No. 8 Texas A&M men’s basketball team used to a dominating second half to rally past the Georgia Bulldogs, 69-53, on Tuesday at Reed Arena.
The Aggies’ fourth-straight win pushed their season record to 19-5 overall and 8-3 in SEC play, which puts them in a tie for third place in the SEC standings. The Bulldogs lost their second straight game, falling to 17-7 overall and 4-8 in league play. It was the Aggies’ sixth straight win over the Bulldogs and 10th victory in the last 11 meetings.
The Aggies shot just 25% in the first half and found themselves in a 32-23 hole at the break but came out of the locker room as a different team. The Maroon & White outscored the Bulldogs 46-21 in the final 20 minutes as they erased the deficit and turned it into a double-digit lead just over halfway through the second stanza. The lead grew to as many as 21 points with 4:08 remaining before the Bulldogs narrowed the Aggies’ lead to the final 16-point margin of victory.
Texas A&M’s defense was the star of the second half as the Bulldogs failed to make their first field goal of the second half until the 7:20 mark. The Aggies limited the Bulldogs to 4-of-22 field goal attempts (18.2%), including 1-of-11 from beyond the arc (9.1%).

Phelps scored all 10 of his total points in the second half and produced two of his three steals, while Washington scored a quick six points to force a UGA timeout before the first media time out.

Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Buzz Williams
On the performance of Solomon Washington….
“He does a lot of things for us every game that the stats don’t always show. The first thing would be how fast he is, particularly on the weak side. He covers up a lot of problems, partly with his athleticism, partly with his IQ. He’s getting to where he communicates at a decibel level that’s helping all of us. A lot of our defensive effort is him. He plays with great emotion, and I think he’s had great growth this year in trying to balance the two.”
On never counting out his group of guys…
“I have incredible faith and belief in our group. I think that belief, even though it’s hard to touch, it’s very noticeable within our group and I did not think that we were good in the first half, but to credit our guys, they were saying all the right things as the travesty was unfolding too. As a coach for a long period of time, I have been around a lot of really good players and a lot of really good coaches and we’re thankful to be at this point, but my love, admiration, respect and trust. If they all need to come live at my house, then I just won’t coach them because I care about them that much.”
Senior Forward Andersson Garcia
On being able to be an initiator on offense…
“I know that my teammates know how to move when the ball is in my hands. I have a good connection with all of them. You probably don’t see that often, but I have got good chemistry with everybody on our team, so I will give credit to my teammates.”
Junior Forward Solomon Washington
On the mindset going into the second half…
“We probably got two turkeys in total in the first half, which is not like us. They were getting too many second chances. They were playing more aggressive than us for the first 20 minutes. Coach just harped on us that we have to be the most aggressive team at the rim for us to win the basketball game.”
