News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
NASHVILLE – Wade Taylor IV poured in a season-high 29 points to become the most prolific scorer in SEC Tournament history, but the No. 14 Texas A&M men’s basketball team dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker to the Texas Longhorns, 94-89, on Thursday at Bridgestone Arena.
The Aggies fall to 22-10 overall and now await their NCAA Tournament opponent and destination that will be determined in three days on NCAA Selection Sunday.
Texas A&M rallied from a nine-point deficit with just over eight minutes remaining in the second half to take a one-point lead on CJ Wilcher’s 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining before the two teams ended regulation knotted at 73-73. In the first overtime, the Aggies forged a five-point lead with just over two minutes left but the Longhorns stormed back to tie to the game with :04 left and Taylor’s teardrop bounced off the front of the rim. In the second overtime, the teams traded the lead five times before a long 3-pointer by Freshman of the Year Tre Johnson gave the Horns a lead they would not relinquish.
In addition to breaking Tennessee’s Allan Houston’s career SEC Tournament record of 173 points from 1990-93, Taylor also took down Houston’s record of 53 free throws and 61 FT attempts, Vanderbilt’s Kevin Anglin’s record for FT percentage of .936 and Kentucky’s Tony Delk’s record of 147 field goal attempts. In addition to his season-high points, Taylor logged career highs with a 17-of-18 performance from the free throw line and pulled down seven defensive rebounds and dished out three assists. For his 11-game career at the SEC Tournament, Taylor scored 202 points on 58-of-156 FG attempts, hit 61-of-65 FTA (.938) and connected on 27-of-70 3-pointers in 331 minutes of action while averaging 18.4 points.
Joining Taylor in double figures were Manny Obaseki with 17 points, including a trio of treys, Andersson Garcia with a double-double effort of 13 points and 10 rebounds and a double-double effort of 10 points and 13 rebounds by Henry Coleman III. Coleman and Garcia helped the Aggies control the board with 53 rebounds, including 20 off the offensive glass. Graduate Hayden Hefner played in his 12th career SEC Tournament game, which matched eight player for most in the history of the postseason classic.
