COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M junior middle blockerJazzmin Babers tied her personal best with 19 kills and junior outside hitter Emily Hardesty added a career-high 18 kills to lead the Aggies to a 25-14, 25-21, 26-28, 25-20 victory over Abilene Christian today at Reed Arena.
The Aggies, 3-1 overall, improve to 2-0 at their own Texas A&M Invitational and will take on New Mexico State for the tournament championship Sunday at 1 p.m. at Reed.
A&M used an 8-0 run in the opening set to pull out to a 20-9 lead over the Wildcats. ACU later got within 22-14 before Hardesty put down a kill and Babers served the first ace of her career to put the Aggies at set point. Freshman Kaitlyn Blake, making the first start of her career while senior middle blocker Shelby Sullivanwho had made 64 consecutive match appearances, sat out with an injury, teamed with Hardesty and sophomore setterStephanie Aiple for a set-ending triple block.
The Aggies, who outhit the Wildcats, .286 to .000, in the opening frame, hit .317 in the second set en route to the 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. A&M scored the first eight points of the set, with Babers and Hardesty pitching in three kills apiece during the run. The Wildcats chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the score at 13. ACU also tied the score at 14- and 18-all but was unable to take the lead as Hardesty put A&M ahead, 20-18, with consecutive kills, giving her eight kills in the set alone.
A&M maintained its two-point lead at 23-21 when Babers put down her fifth kill of the set and sophomore opposite hitterAshlie Reasor aced a serve to end the set and give the Aggies a 2-0 lead in the match.
There were 11 ties and four lead changes in the third set as A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli changed up the lineup to give other players live-match experience. The Aggies held a 14-9 lead when ACU went on a 5-0 run to even the score. The Wildcats tied the score three more times before an A&M attack error put ACU ahead, 18-17, marking the Wildcats’ first lead in the match other than a 1-0 lead in the opening set.
Following an A&M timeout, Babers posted a kill and junior setter Kaysie Shebeneck, who was made her first appearance of the season when she started the second set, followed with a dump kill despite taking a shot to the nose on the play. Shebeneck remained in the match and teamed with Blake for a block before being tended to for a bloody nose during back-to-back ACU and A&M timeouts.
ACU, which outhit A&M .271 to .196, tied the score at 20-20 before the Aggies scored four unanswered points, including a block by Hardesty and Blake that put A&M at match point. The Wildcats, however, fought off four match points to knot the score at 24. Reasor then got a kill on an ACU overpass, but the Wildcats countered with a kill. Aggie freshman Paige Panter, who made her first appearance in front of the home crowd earlier in the match, got a kill to once again put A&M at match point, but an A&M service error and back-to-back ACU blocks clinched the come-from-behind win for the Wildcats.
ACU carried the momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. A&M would later use a five-point run to take an 11-10 lead. A&M continued to rally, outscoring the Aggies 10-3 to build their largest lead at 21-13.
Leading 23-18, Hardesty put down her 18th kill to put the Aggies at match point. A&M then had two attack miscues before ACU served long to end the match.
Sophomore libero Amy Nettles led the Aggies with 17 digs and Shebeneck also reached double figures with a career-high 11 digs. Blake finished with a match-high and career-high eight blocks as A&M outblocked the Wildcats, 13.5 to 8.

Texas A&M Head Coach Laurie Corbelli Quotes:
Thoughts on the match…
“Tonight’s match was interesting. We wanted to play a lot of different lineups if we could. Knowing their attackers could be dangerous, I felt like we did a really nice job of assignments. (Emily) Hardesty was golden all night long. She’s so complete. (Jazzmin) Babers did a really nice job tonight. I thought we had some miscommunication and trouble passing for a while. We really encouraged them to stay relaxed and fix up little bit of our technique, and luckily got the win.”
On so many players seeing action…
“It’s important because it’s so early in the season. Let them get that feeling for the competition, because it is very different than training. We need them to get competition under their belt for the team’s sake. We need our depth, and they are wonderful players. It just a matter of getting them out there. When you’re a position player, you usually have different people you’re in with. So it’s challenging and we’re young there. It’s great for our experience.”
On playing without seniors Angela Lowak and Shelby Sullivan…
“Obviously, without the two seniors on the court, there’s a handover of leadership. It’s just a different team out there without the voices of Lowak and Sullivan. I think that was part of the adjustment that the team had to make today in order to get this win.”
On facing New Mexico State for the tournament championship…
“It’s going to be a lot of fun. They have a really nice offense and they’re quick. They pose a big challenge for us. The team needs to be poised and ready to control the ball. We need to have ball control, play defense and pass really well for us to be effective. New Mexico State had a great match last night in five sets. At this point, whichever team plays better will get the win. You never know what the matchup is going to be and who is going to be on. If you have too many players who are struggling, no matter how good you are, you might not get the win. On paper it’s a lot different than on the court, so we’ll have to play the match and see what happens.”
