News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M outfielder Caden Sorrell has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, as announced by league officials Monday afternoon.
The weekly honor marks the first of the rookie’s career and the third straight SEC Freshman of the Week award for the Aggies. Fellow rookie Gavin Grahovac had earned the honor the previous two weeks.
Sorrell helped the Maroon & White to a 3-1 week as the freshman registered a team-high .538 batting average to go along with a .647 on-base percentage. In the four contests, the rookie recorded six runs scored, four RBI, four walks, two doubles and one triple. In Tuesday’s win over Houston, Sorrell went 4-for-4 and finished a homer shy of the cycle. In Saturday’s series clinching win over Georgia, the freshman put the Aggies in front for good with a two-run single and finished the game 3-for-3 at the dish with three RBI.
On the year, Sorrell is slashing .302/.400/.604 to go along with an SEC-best four triples, five homers, six doubles and 28 RBI. Since taking over the starting role in left field on March 23, the rookie has batted .316, tripled three times, belted four homers, ripped five doubles and driven in 22 RBI. During that stretch the Maroon & White are 18-3.
Sorrell and the Aggies are back in action tomorrow night as they host Tarleton at 6 p.m. at Blue Bell Park.
