Texans, Cowboys Both Draft Cornerbacks in First Round

Texans Choose Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson 16th Overall

HOUSTON (AP) _ The Houston Texans have taken Wake Forest cornerback Kevin Johnson with the 16th overall pick in the NFL draft.

Johnson had 43 tackles, including 3 1/2 for losses, defended 15 passes and had three interceptions as a senior last season. The 6-foot Johnson joins a secondary that features cornerbacks Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph.

The Texans have gone heavy on defense in recent years, selecting a defensive player in the first round in six of the last seven seasons, including selecting Jadeveon Clowney first overall last year. They did it again Thursday night.

Johnson was voted second team All-ACC by coaches last season to wrap up a career where he broke up 35 passes, which were the fourth-most in school history.

Cowboys get Cornerback Byron Jones from UConn in 1st Round

IRVING, Texas (AP) _ The Cowboys have taken cornerback Byron Jones from Connecticut with the 27th pick in the first round of the draft.

It’s the second time in four drafts that Dallas has taken a cornerback in the first round. The Cowboys traded up to get Morris Claiborne at No. 6 in 2012, but he has underperformed in three seasons and isn’t expected to be ready for training camp because of a knee injury.

Dallas signed Brandon Carr to a $50 million contract in free agency the same year that Claiborne was drafted, and he had a subpar 2014 season.

Jones played the first seven games of last season before a lingering shoulder injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. He had eight career interceptions at UConn.
