Report: Tennessee hires Heupel as new football coach

The University of Tennessee has reportedly hired University of Central Florida’s Josh Heupel to be its next football coach.

Heupel has spent the last three seasons at UCF, leading the Knights to a 28-8 overall record.

He reunites with Volunteers athletics director Danny White, who was hired away from UCF last week.

The 42-year-old Heupel was a two-year starter at quarterback for Oklahoma from 1999-2000, finishing as the Heisman Trophy runner-up his final season.

He replaces Jeremy Pruitt, who was fired after three years in Knoxville when an internal investigation revealed NCAA violations within the program.
