BASTROP, Texas (AP) _ A judge has ruled that a 15-year-old central Texas girl may be tried as an adult for the slaying of her mother last August.
Haley Bellard is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of 42-year-old Tracy Lynn Bellard at her home in the McDade community, about 30 miles east of Austin.
The Austin American-Statesman reports Bastrop County state District Judge Christopher Duggan ruled that the teen is “of sufficient sophistication and maturity to be tried as an adult” and “to aid the attorneys in her defense.”
Haley Bellard was 14 at the time of the slaying. Prosecutors say she and her 18-year-old boyfriend, Joseph Dewayne Douglas, killed the girl’s mother because she had forbidden their relationship.
