Teacher Keeps Teaching After Drug Indictment

McALLEN, Texas (AP) _ A South Texas fifth-grade science teacher remained in the classroom for more than a month after being indicted on federal drug trafficking charges.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents plucked David Rey Ramirez, known on the street as Devil, from Rio Grande City’s General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary School last week. School district officials say they were never told about his arrest or his Dec. 10 indictment on charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute at least 1,000 kilograms of marijuana.

Ramirez, who has been detained since his arrest, was scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Scott Hacker for a detention hearing Tuesday in Laredo. Ramirez’s attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.
