TaxMasters Victims Can Expect Letter from Texas AG

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott says thousands of former TaxMasters Inc. clients can expect a letter outlining their rights during Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Abbott offered an update Tuesday on the now-defunct tax assistance company.

A jury in March returned a $195 million verdict against TaxMasters, its predecessor companies and its founder, Patrick Cox, for violating the Texas
Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Cox was featured in nationwide TaxMasters television commercials.

Abbott says the company had filed for Chapter 11 reorganization, but changed to Chapter 7 liquidation. Abbott says the names of more than 50,000 former TaxMasters clients remain under seal.

Texas worked with a bankruptcy trustee and the University of Houston to set up a call center to provide information. That number is 1-877-839-8422.
