Szeryk Advances to Round of 16 at Ladies’ British Amateur

Texas A&M sophomore golfer Maddie Szeryk advanced to the round of 16 at the 112th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at Portsteward Golf Club on Thursday, defeating FIU’s Meghan MacLaren 3 and 2 and Frida Kinhult of Sweden 1 up.

Szeryk knocked off MacLaren, the reigning British women’s stroke play champion, in the first round of match play, which started with 64 qualifiers after two rounds of stroke play on the par 73 / 6,262 yard course. She advanced to the round of 32, where she beat Frida Kinhult 1 up to move on again.

Szeryk faces Leslie Cloots, who plays her college golf for North Carolina, in the round of 16 on Friday. Cloots was the runner-up in this tournament a year ago. The match is slated to tee off at 8:50 a.m. local/2:50 a.m. CT.

Szeryk helped Texas A&M to the SEC team title in 2015, finishing as the tournament’s individual runner-up. Szeryk was an All-American and the SEC’s Freshman of the Year in 2015.
