A&M System Selected As 1 of 6 Drone Testing Sites

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected the A&M System one of six research and testing sites that will help develop unmanned aircraft, also known as drones.

The A&M System venture involves the campus in Corpus Christi and the engineering and experiment station in College Station.

The FAA’s Michael Michael Hwerta says A&M plans to develop system safety requirements for unmanned aircraft, with the goal of protocols and procedures for airworthiness testing.

Hwerta says all six test sites will provide information about how to integrate drone technology into American skies.

Two months ago, the Board of Regents approved formation of a drone center that has $11 million dollars in funding and pledges for future research, which was taking place regardless of the FAA program.
