Sumlin announces most of his staff

Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin announced the majority of his first Aggie coaching staff on Friday.

“All of these coaches have great reputations as coaches and recruiters,” Sumlin said. “They come from winning programs that have played on some of college football’s biggest stages. They have played for and won national championships and are known for their ability to recognize talent and develop it at the collegiate level.”

A national coach of the year finalist in two of his four seasons at the University of Houston, Sumlin brought in three members of his offensive staff at UH: Kliff Kingsbury  (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), B.J. Anderson (offensive line) and Clarence McKinney (running backs/recruiting coordinator). All three of his former Cougar assistants played high school football in the state of Texas, and McKinney also coached at several Houston-area high schools, including serving as head coach for three successful seasons at Jack Yates HS.

Sumlin’s high-octane offenses at Houston ranked among the nation’s most prolific units, including the 2011 season when the 13-1 Cougars led the nation in total offense (599.1 yards/game), passing offense (450.1) and scoring (49.3). The 2011 Cougars set NCAA FBS season records for total offense (8,387 yards) and passing yards (6,301). Kingsbury tutored record-setting quarterback Case Keenum in his senior season when he led the nation in passing yards, passing touchdowns and total offense.

Sumlin tabbed veteran defensive coordinator and former Marshall University head coach Mark Snyder to run his defense. Snyder, who helped Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, coached his alma mater Marshall for five seasons (2005-09) and has been a defensive coordinator at South Florida (2010-11), Ohio State (2004) and Youngstown State (1996).

Overseeing the Aggie wide receivers for Sumlin will be Garland native David Beaty, who has served as offensive coordinator at Kansas and Rice during his career. Before joining the college ranks, Beaty coached at four Dallas-area high schools and was head coach at Irving MacArthur HS and North Dallas HS.

Sumlin brought in Brian Polian from Stanford University to serve as special teams coordinator and to coach the tight ends. Recognized for his recruiting prowess by ESPN.comRivals.com and Tom Lemming/MaxPreps, Polian has coached in the Fiesta Bowl (twice), the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl during his career.

Sumlin retained second-year Texas A&M assistant coach Terrell Williams, who will continue to coach the Aggie defensive line. Last year’s A&M defensive front helped the Aggies rank No. 12 nationally in rushing defense (101.9) and lead the nation in quarterback sacks with 51.

Sumlin also announced that former Texas A&M baseball pitcher Justin Moore will serve as Associate Athletic Director for Football. Moore served in a similar capacity for Sumlin at the University of Houston. Moore was a two-time All-Big 12 pitcher and two-time team captain for the Aggies while lettering from 2001-04.

Overseeing the Aggie football strength and conditioning program will be former A&M standout Larry Jackson, who was UH’s Director of Sports Performance and also worked with Sumlin at the University of Oklahoma. Jackson earned second-team All-Southwest Conference honors at defensive end as a senior in 1994 and worked in A&M strength and conditioning program from 1999-2004.
