State Authorities Investigated Mom Who Killed Kids

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Texas child welfare authorities say they were called twice to investigate a mother who eventually shot her two children at a state welfare office before killing herself.

In the first case, Texas Child Protective Services received a possible neglect report in September 2010 after Rachelle Grimmer and her two children were found living in a tent on a South Texas beach. CPS spokesman Patrick Crimmins says investigators found no evidence of neglect and closed the case.

Authorities say Grimmer shot her children and killed herself late Monday after the Laredo standoff after the family had been denied food stamps.

Crimmins says the cases weren’t found sooner because of different surname spellings and a different first name for the mother.
