Senator Promises Filibuster Over Road Funding

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ An angry Sen. John Carona is vowing to wage a filibuster over a bill renewing the Texas Transportation Commission, the state’s road-building agency. That could come later Monday — the last day of the legislative session.

The Dallas Republican is upset that House and Senate negotiators stripped out a provision that would allow counties in the state’s largest metro areas to approve increases in gas taxes and other fees to raise money for road projects.

Carona, who had fiercely promoted the local option measure, said Sunday he was prepared to use Senate filibuster rules to essentially talk the transportation bill to death in retaliation.
