Schmidt Added to Soccer Coaching Staff

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Former Texas A&M Soccer standout Mary Grace Schmidt has been named a volunteer assistant coach for the Aggies, head coach G Guerrieri recently announced.

“I’m proud to have her on the staff and I think she will make tremendous contributions on the field and in the office,” Guerrieri said. “As a former captain and key player on our team she is used to the leadership roles around our team. She comes from a very competitive background and she’s extremely dedicated to helping Texas A&M win championships.”

Schmidt, a four-year letterwinner at Texas A&M, was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer team in her freshman season. She helped the Aggies to 10 shutouts in 2009 and was named the team’s “Newcomer of the Year” after starting in 23 of 25 games. Schmidt was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie Second Team in 2009.

In her sophomore season, Schmidt made appearances in 22 matches and started 20 contests on the backline. She was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team in 2010.

Schmidt was named a team co-captain prior to her junior campaign in 2011. She made nine starts and 16 appearances and helped the Aggie defense limit the opponents to fewer than half the amounts of shots the taken by A&M. She garnered Academic All-Big 12 Second Team recognition for the second consecutive year.

She did not see action during her senior campaign due to a back injury.

In her three years on the pitch, Schmidt helped lead Texas A&M to a 46-18-8 mark with at least one NCAA Tournament win in every season, as well as a Big 12 regular season title in 2010 and Big 12 Championship crown in 2011. She received a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M in May 2013.

Texas A&M team kicks off the 2013 campaign on August 14 with an exhibition match at UC Irvine. To learn more about the soccer team, visit AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieSoccer on Twitter.
