Rice beats Aggies at Houston College Classic, 1-0

HOUSTON – For a second consecutive day at the Houston College Classic a single run proved to be the margin of defeat for the No. 9 Texas A&M baseball team as Saturday the Aggies fell to No. 17 Rice 1-0 in front of 9,987 fans at Minute Maid Park.

Each school got a superb outing from its starting pitcher as Rice’s Austin Kubitza and A&M’s Michael Wacha matched one another pitch-for-pitch in what became the shortest game in the history of the Houston College Classic at just one hour and 45 minutes.

Kubitza (1-1) baffled the Aggie hitters all night long and scattered six hits while striking out seven and walking none in the first complete game effort of the Owl freshman’s career.

Wacha (2-1), meanwhile, surrendered just a single run in the bottom of the third inning for the first tally against the Aggie sophomore in his first 15.1 innings this year. The Texarkana, Texas, native tossed seven innings in the contest, allowing just five hits and tying his season high with seven strikeouts.

Following a scoreless opening two and a half frames, it was the Owls who plated what would be the only run during the pitcher’s duel. A leadoff double by Rice first baseman J.T. Chargois set the table for the inning and teammate Craig Manuel was able to drive him in on a sacrifice fly three batters later.

Junior closer Ross Stripling relieved Wacha in the bottom of the eighth and kept the Aggies within a single run but A&M could not mount a ninth-inning comeback.

“Austin Kubitza was outstanding tonight, especially his slider,” Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “He dominated us from start to finish but especially early on. I felt like the last three or four innings we took some pretty good swings against him. They were able to get a leadoff double and we got a double with two outs. To their credit, they were able to get him over to third and then get him in. I was proud of Michael Wacha and I thought Ross Stripling did a nice job too. It was a great game if you’re a baseball fan.”

Freshman centerfielder Krey Bratsen notched the game’s only multi-hit performance as the Bryan, Texas, native single twice. Senior catcher Kevin Gonzalez collected the Aggies’ lone extra-base hit of the contest when he notched his team-leading fifth double with two outs in the second.

Texas A&M concludes play at the Houston College Classic on Sunday when it will face off against Houston in a 6 p.m. contest at Minute Maid Park. Sophomore lefty Ross Hales (1-1; 2.35 ERA) gets the start for Texas A&M and will be opposed by UH’s right-hander Chase Wellbrock (1-0; 3.60 ERA).
