Former local businessman and NFL official M.L. “Red” Cashion passed away on Sunday morning.
Cashion was actually born on in the Texas A&M Campus in 1931, where his father was secretary of the YMCA building.
Cashion and his brother, both played football for A&M Consolidated growing up, but Cashion decided to turn to officiating in 1952 while he was attending A&M.
He worked his way through the ranks of the Southwest Conference before spending 25 years officiating in the NFL. He was referee in Super Bowl XX and XXX.
Off the field Cashion was an insurance executive who along with the late Dick Haddox started Burgess, Cashion and Haddox, and company, which eventually became Anco Insurance.
In 2012, Cashion wrote with Rusty Burson “First Dooowwwnnn… and Life to Go!”, a book Cashion said in a WTAW News interview has applications not only as an official, but with business and personal relationships.
Cashion was chosen Citizen of the year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1994 and was honored by the Community Foundation in 2008.
Funeral services for Red Cashion, who died at the age of 88, are Monday, February 18 at 10 a.m. at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station.
