Red Light Petition Turned In

Red light cameras could be coming to a voting booth near you.

What started as an attempt to appeal a red light camera ticket took a few months to develop into petition with thousands of signatures designed to put the cameras up for a public vote.

At a red light camera petition rally Thursday organizer Jim Ash told a crowd of about 70 supporters how much he appreciated them, while also emphasizing his respect for the city.

Ash says his petition had 925 verified signatures when he got to city hall, and about another 25 people signed right before he turned it in.

City Secretary Connie Hooks says her office will now verify the signatures to make sure at least 823 are valid.

If the petition is valid it would probably come before city council August 17th and then be put to a public vote in November.
