Recap Of Blinn College Trustees October Regular Meeting

The Blinn College board of trustees, meeting at their new RELLIS campus location, dealt mostly with business at their home base in Brenham during October’s regular meeting.

Blinn’s board awarded a contract to renovate the Brenham campus library to Bryan contractor Madison Construction, which was among five companies that submitted a bid. The project budget is approximately $2.2 million dollars. Funds are available in the repairs and renovations budget and 2016 Washington County bond issue funds. The project is estimated to start next February or March, and be completed by early August.

Trustees also approved seeking bids for a $450,000 dollar window replacement project at the Brenham campus Old Main building. That project will require the approval of the Texas Historical Commission because Old Main is on the National Historic Register.

Trustees also approved adding men’s and women’s golf programs at the Brenham campus. The cost for the non-scholarship program is approximately $232,681 for staff, operating budget, and rental fees for local golf courses. These costs will be offset by tuition and fees from the golf program students. The program is expected to attract 20 male and 10 female student-athletes.

The board approved one item affecting the RELLIS campus. That’s proceeding with taking bids to move Blinn’s health sciences department from the Health Sciences Center to RELLIS. Administrators have set a budget of $500,000 dollars for the move that will be done next spring and summer.

There was no announcement about filling two board vacancies created by last month’s resignation of Stacy Aschenbeck and last weekend’s death of Richard Powell…both from Brenham.

From Blinn College:

The Blinn College District Board of Trustees has approved a renovation design for the W.L. Moody, Jr. Library that will create a modern, more welcoming atmosphere for students.
The board approved the design during its regular meeting Tuesday.

Located on the Brenham Campus, the Moody Library was constructed in 1967 and expanded in 1981. The renovated design includes new lighting, upgraded finishes and furnishings, improved electrical and technology connectivity, and HVAC and restroom upgrades. The circulation desk will be relocated toward the front of the building to better welcome entrants while widening the space connecting the original library and the 1981 addition.

Once the renovations are complete, students will enjoy seven study rooms, a seminar room, an enclosed computer classroom, a vending area, and additional windows.

The board also authorized the College to award a contract to Madison Construction, L.P., of Bryan, for construction manager at risk services related to the library renovations.

In other business, the board authorized the College to seek proposals from contractors for services related to relocating its Division of Health Sciences fixtures, furniture, and equipment from its current location in the Texas A&M Health Science Center Clinical Building I to the RELLIS Campus. Blinn’s Health Sciences programs will be located at RELLIS beginning in the Fall 2019 semester.

The board also authorized the College to replace the current wood window frames on the Old Main Building with aluminum frames as part of an upcoming window replacement project. The aluminum frames will provide a similar historic architectural style to the existing wood frames. As the Old Main Building is on the National Historic Register, the Texas Historical Commission must also review the project.
