DeShields homers as Rangers top Royals 2-1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Delino DeShields homered in the seventh to break a tie and the Texas Rangers defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 Sunday.
DeShields, who was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Round Rock, walked and doubled before leading off the seventh with his third home run. DeShields hit a 2-1 pitch from Luke Hochevar out to left.
The loss dropped the Royals to 48-49, the first time the World Series champions have been below .500 since May 15 when they were 18-19. The Royals have lost 13 of 19 games in July.
Left-hander Alex Claudio (2-1) picked up the win, pitching a scoreless sixth.
Hochevar (2-3) took the loss and has allowed six runs in 6 1-3 innings in July.
Rangers relievers Claudio, Keone Kela, Jake Diekman and Sam Dyson held the Royals scoreless the final four innings.
Altuve’s 2 homers, 6 RBIs lead Astros over Angels 13-3
HOUSTON (AP) _ Jose Altuve hit two of Houston’s season-high five homers and had a career-high six RBIs to lead the Houston Astros to a 13-3 win on Sunday for a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.
Luis Valbuena, Preston Tucker and Evan Gattis also homered for the Astros, who extended their winning streak against the Angels to 11 games.
There were runners at first and second with no outs in the first when Altuve connected off Tim Lincecum (2-4) on a home run to left-center field to make it 3-0. Valbuena’s home run came with one out in the inning to push the lead to 4-0.
George Springer hit a two-run single with no outs in the second inning before scoring on Altuve’s second homer with one out to make it 8-0.
Houston starter Mike Fiers (7-6) allowed nine hits and three runs in seven innings for the win.
