Proposed $5 Million Sale of Treated Water on CS Council Agenda

The College Station city council will be asked Thursday to sell about half the treated wastewater it produces to an energy company.

Dave Coleman at College Station Utilities says the proposal calls for Apache Corporation to pump more than three million gallons a day from the Carters Creek plant east to ponds built by Apache, then piped to oil drilling and fracking sites.

Subject to approval by the council and the state, Coleman says Apache will be buying approximately $5 million dollars of treated water over the next 18 to 24 months.

Coleman says the revenue will be used for capital projects without having to issue debt, which will keep water rates from increasing.

Coleman gives a shoutout to Apache for buying treated instead of potable water. Coleman says the quantity being purchased is equal to serving at least 25,000 residential customers a day, which does not include water for irrigation use.

Coleman says six million gallons of water is treated daily. Other than the proposed contract with Apache, Coleman says fields at Veterans Park use 250,000 gallons a day. And the only other paying customer is Pebble Creek Country Club, which buys treated water on an occasional basis.
