Prison for Mailing Marijuana

McALLEN, Texas (AP) _ A federal judge in McAllen has sentenced four illegal immigrants to prison for using the U.S. Postal Service to mail marijuana.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office on Tuesday announced the sentences for 42-year-old Leopoldo Perales-Rodriguez, 22-year-old Juan Carlos Hernandez, 27-year-old Victor Hugo Mares and 46-year-old Margarito Gallardo. All four lived in Mission.

Each pleaded guilty last summer to conspiracy to distribute marijuana through the postal system.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa on Monday sentenced Perales-Rodriguez to 42 months in prison. Hernandez received a 27-month term. Prison terms of 30 months were ordered for Mares and for Gallardo.

Prosecutors say the packages mainly were mailed from south Texas to Connecticut, New York, Florida and Puerto Rico.
