Powerful Storms Hit East Texas

DALLAS (AP) _ Savage east Texas thunderstorms have caused widespread damage, but no serious injuries have been reported.

In Canton, 55 miles east of Dallas, at least two trucks and several signs toppled and the roof of a convenience store damaged at Texas 19 and Interstate 20 around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Downed power lines closed the interstate for several hours. Van Zandt County sheriff’s Deputy Chuck Allen says multiple homes in rural areas northeast of Canton were reported as damaged, and there were several reports of minor injuries.

Hopkins County sheriff’s Deputy Ron Lowrie says the wind damaged three mobile homes and toppled two tractor-trailer rigs, closing Interstate 30 for a while near Sulphur Springs, about 70 miles northeast of Dallas. He said no injuries were reported.

A National Weather Service team will be dispatched to the areas Thursday to determine if the storm winds were tornadoes.
