Postman Honored for Saving Kids’ Lives

HOUSTON (AP) _ A U.S. Postal Service carrier in Houston is being honored for saving two children from a burning home in June.

Danny Thompson was on his route when he saw smoke from an air-conditioning unit. He knocked on the door but got no answer. He kept delivering mail but went back and knocked again after noticing there was more smoke. Then he found that two children were in the house alone.

Thompson asked the 13-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy to find the keys to the gates that were locked from the outside. After he unlocked the gate, the youngsters escaped just moments before the house went up in flames.

Houston city officials proclaimed “Danny Thompson Day” at City Hall Tuesday afternoon. Thompson says he doesn’t consider himself a hero.
