CONROE, Texas (AP) _ Authorities say a woman accused of gunning down a mother outside a suburban Houston pediatric clinic and then kidnapping her 3-day-old infant had been desperate to find a baby after suffering a miscarriage but telling her fiance that she had given birth to their child.
Verna McClain, jailed without bail and facing a capital murder charge, is set to make a court appearance in Conroe, north of Houston, on Thursday.
Investigators say McClain has admitted to fatally shooting 28-year-old Kala Golden on Tuesday in order to take her 3-day-old son, Keegan Schuchardt. The infant was recovered several hours later with McClain’s sister.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Detective John Schmitt says the 30-year-old McClain does “appear remorseful for what happened.”
The kidnapped baby has been returned to his family.
