Perry Says He’ll Try Again on Immigration Reform

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he’ll keep pushing state lawmakers to pass a bill allowing police to ask anyone they stop about their immigration status.

In a statement on his Twitter account, Perry said Monday’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on an Arizona law still allows Texas to pursue a so-called “sanctuary cities” bill that failed to pass in 2011.

The Texas bill would have given police more power to ask anyone they detain about their citizenship status. Hispanic Democrats called it racist and a tool to harass Latinos.

The Supreme Court threw out major parts of Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigrants. But the justices approved the part that requires police to check the immigration status of those they stop for other reasons.
