Perry Defends A&M System Grant

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A $50 million grant from the state’s Emerging Technology Fund to the Texas A&M University System is being defended by Gov. Rick Perry’s office.

Republican Rep. Jim Pitts has voiced concern about the grant to help construct and create the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing, a partnership between the university system and pharmaceutical companies.

Pitts is chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

He and other lawmakers on Tuesday asked officials from the governor’s office about the work to be done at the center.

They also inquired why money for the January grant was transferred from the state’s general job creation account known as the Texas Enterprise Fund to the Emerging Tech Fund.
