BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) _ A Brownsville couple has been jailed for allegedly keeping the woman’s 12-year-old daughter in an unlit closet in their home for about a year.
Alfredo and Leticia Ines are in a Cameron County jail charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint. Bonds for each are set at $275,000. Jail records do not show attorneys for
either.
Brownsville police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique says the couple released their daughter only to attend school, eat or use the bathroom during the day. Investigators say she would do her homework by the light coming from beneath the door.
Police say she appeared to be malnourished and looked small for her age. Child Protective Services began investigating when one of the girl’s three brothers reported the situation to officials at his school.
