Thursday evening update:
The College Station city council unanimously approved the zoning change requested by Pappas restaurants.
Original story:
Many have waited for the better part of two years to learn when Pappas restaurants will build at the site of the former Scott and White clinic at University and the freeway.
Construction of a Pappadeaux’s seafood restaurant could start as soon as this December or January.
The College Station city council will consider at its meeting Thursday allowing Pappas to rebuild 20 parking spaces to provide proper drainage. That takes a zoning change, which was recommended at last month’s planning and zoning commission meeting.
Among the questions asked, was why it’s taken Pappas so long to get started. P&Z member Casey Oldham noted Pappas acquired the property in November 2013. Consulting engineer Veronica Morgan said it was due to the staffing the company has for expansion. P&Z member Jerome Rektorik added it was not unusual for Pappas to take that amount of time between acquiring land and starting construction.
Morgan says landscaping will be similar to restaurants across the street, including Cheddar’s, Fishdaddy’s, and Texas Roadhouse.
A property owner whose backyard borders the restaurant was told there would be buffering, but Pappas has not provided details.
