Pair of Aggie alums reach finals of U.S. Olympic Team Trials

EUGENE – Aggie alums Ameer Webb and Ricky Babineaux advanced to their respective finals in the 200 meters and 400-meter hurdles during the eighth day of action in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials where 22,356 were in attendance at Hayward Field.

However, Texas A&M junior Shamier Little finished fifth in her semifinal heat of the 400m hurdles and did not reach the final. Little posted a time of 55.64 seconds in the faster of the two semifinal heats where the top four advanced to the final.

Dalilah Muhammad won the second semifinal heat in 54.14 ahead of Harvard’s Autumne Franklin (55.40) and Ashley Spencer (55.41). Cassandra Tate (55.49) claimed the fourth position in front of Little.

Webb clocked a time of 19.97 (1.4 wind) as runner-up to the world-leading 19.74 produced by LaShawn Merritt, who won the 400m title on Sunday. Aggie senior Devin Jenkins finished sixth in another heat with a 20.94.

Babineaux generated a personal best of 49.20 as he charged to the finish line off the final hurdle to place second in the first semifinal behind Michael Tinsley’s leading time of 49.15. Babineaux, who will race in the final on Sunday, entered the Olympic Trials with a PR of 50.83 from a meet he ran in May, then improved to 50.05 in the prelims of the Trials.

The women’s 200m had a pair of Texas A&M alums advancing to the semifinals with Jeneba Tarmoh and Kamaria Brown. Tarmoh finished second in her heat with a 23.02 while Brown advanced on time with a 23.12 after finishing fourth in her heat. Ashton Purvis finished seventh with a 23.87, which didn’t advance on time.

Saturday’s action will include the start of the heptathlon for Annie Kunz along with the final of the javelin for Aggie sisters Maggie and Audrey Malone along with Texas A&M volunteer assistant coach Ariana Ince. Webb will race in the 200m final while the semifinals of the women’s 200m will include Brown and Tarmoh.
