After the College Station code enforcement office found more than 30 violations at a housing complex occupied by low income residents, the property owner notified those living in 38 duplexes they have to be out by October third.
A representative of the property owner on a gravel stretch of Cain Road west of Holleman, Jasper Construction, says it’s a business decision. He says there is a pending sale of the land and they do not want to spend the money to resolve what he said was the city’s generic list of violations, that were almost all related to trash or the appearance of the area. He said none of the homes were in danger of collapsing.
Community services director Debbie Eller says the violations followed a police call on an unrelated matter. That led to an inspection that also involved code enforcement, a city building official, police, and a fire marshal.
Eller says the tenants are not being evicted. She says the residents live on a month to month lease where the property owner has the right to issue the order to move.
Eller and the property owner say they are assisting residents with housing options.
