Opposition to turning Stephen F. Austin middle school (SFA) into a new administration center was discussed at length this week by the Bryan school board.

Board member David Stasny says that’s enough to shoot down the entire $132 million dollar bond package.

Board president Doug Wunneburger says there is misinformation about $15 million dollars spent on SFA since 1938. He says most of that was not in the last 15 years.

Superintendent Tommy Wallis says this is no different than any bond election he’s been associated, where there are opponents and supporters.

Not shared during the board workshop was the estimated cost of the new school to replace SFA, the estimate to turn SFA into administrative offices, or what would become of the current Bryan ISD buildings that would be vacated by a move to SFA.

The recommendations of the board’s 20 member advisory committee included spending $55 million on buildings related to grades 5 through 12. That includes replacing SFA, expanding the district’s three other middle schools, and building an addition at Rudder.

Another $24 million would go towards converting other non-education buildings, including SFA.

The board will decide next month whether to send the proposed bond package to Bryan ISD voters in November.
