Opening Statements Set in 2nd Air Force Sex Scandal Trial

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Opening statements are set for the court-martial of Texas Air Force basic training instructor charged in a building sex scandal at the base.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys for Tech Sgt. Christopher Smith are to address the military jury Wednesday at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Smith is charged with trying to develop a personal relationship with a trainee and obstructing justice at Lackland, which is one of the nation’s busiest military training centers.

Smith faces up to a year in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted. He’s one of 15 Lackland instructors under investigation.

Investigators have identified 38 female trainees as alleged victims.

Earlier this month, Staff Sgt. Luis Walker was sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
