COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 24 Texas A&M women’s tennis swept Alabama, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies (14-1, 2-0) won their first two SEC matches for the first time since the 2013 season.

“We are really pleased to get off such a great start this season and in conference play,” Texas A&M women’s tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. “We like to break down the season into three phases; nonconference, conference and postseason; so it is great to see us continue the momentum we have built up in the nonconference so far in SEC play. Playing in these conditions against a solid opponent like Alabama was good experience for us and even better seeing the score line we finished with.”

The Maroon & White earned 14 wins in their first 15 matches for the first time since the 2013 season. The Aggies joined the 2013 squad for the best 15-match stretch to open a season in program history, the ’13 team raced out to a 15-1 mark before falling in the NCAA Championship Finals.

The Aggies earned the doubles point for the 11th time in 14 matches this spring to open the match against the Tide (10-5, 0-2) with a 1-0 lead. A&M’s Riley McQuaid and Lucia Quiterio earned their third straight win with a 6-1 triumph over Alabama’s Ann Selim and Kimberly Gintrand on court three. With the top two courts in tie breakers, the Aggies clinched the point with a 7-6(2) victory on court one by Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova over the Tide’s Andie Daniell and Moka Ito.

A&M transitioned to single play with all of the momentum, carrying that on to five first set victories. A&M doubled it’s advantage through a 6-0, 6-3 win by Dorthea Faa-Hviding on court six over Alabama’s Gintrand. The win was the eighth straight for Faa-Hviding, a sophomore from Stavanger, Norway, as she improved to 14-4 this year.

McBryde, an A&M freshman from Wollongong, Australia, tacked on the third point with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court four over the Tide’s Selim. McBryde posted her seventh straight win and eighth of the spring season on Sunday.

McQuaid, a sophomore from Tustin, California, clinched the match for the Aggies with a 6-0, 6-3 win on court five over Alabama’s Luca Fabian. The win was McQuaid’s 16th in her last 17 matches and second clinch victory of the dual season.

The Aggies continue SEC play on the road next weekend at No. 30 Tennessee and No. 2 Georgia.
