No. 16 Texas A&M rallies late but drops 2-1 decision at No. 19 Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 16 Texas A&M softball rallied to tie the game in the seventh, but fell to No. 19 Missouri, 2-1, Sunday at University Field.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third as Sami Fagan recorded an RBI single to right, driving in Raime Cohen.

After three scoreless innings, sophomore Ashley Walters led off the seventh with a single to center and was replaced by senior pinch runner Alex Masek. Junior April Ryan laid a sacrifice bunt down the third base line to move Masek into scoring position. SophomoreKristen Cuyos doubled on a 1-2 pitch off of first base and the ball rolled to the corner in right, plating Masek. Freshman Riley Sartainwalked to give the Aggies (33-13, 6-11 SEC) runners on first and second, but Mizzou reliever Paige Lowary was able to get out of the jam.

“Tip your hat to April Ryan for laying down a perfect bunt to get Alex to second,” head coach Jo Evans said. “Alex got a great jump on that. For Kristen to step up and go the other way was big. She fouled off a couple of pitches off the handle and turns around and gets done what she needs to do. I am proud of Kristen for fighting through that. She had a great night last night, and when we needed her tonight, she stepped up.”

In the bottom half of the seventh, the Tigers loaded the bases with one-out and scored the game-winning run on an infield single by Chloe Rathburn.

Sophomore Trinity Harrington was saddled with the loss, throwing 6.1 innings giving up two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts.

“Trinity was great,” Evans said. “I am really proud of her. We give up an unearned run in the third inning, and she doesn’t buckle. She stays out there and fights. She fought through a little bit of a jam in the sixth. In the seventh, she gave up a couple of walks, but really threw the pitch we needed her to throw in that situation.”

The series will resume Monday at 6 p.m. and can be seen on the SEC Network and heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
