No. 11 Texas A&M men surge into second place at SEC Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 11 Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team surged into second place in the team standing with another strong day at the 2018 Southeastern Conference Championships on Friday at the Student Recreation Natatorium.

In the Team Standings…
The Aggies have scored 527 points and trail leader Florida (595) by 68 points after three days of action. Looking up at the Gators and Aggies were Georgia (514), Tennessee (506), Auburn (438.5), Missouri (424.5), South Carolina (381), Alabama (360.5, Kentucky (326) and LSU (253.5).

Head Coach Jay Holmes said:
“We are in a good place right now, but there’s a lot of things that just need to happen right the next two days. There were some things that went right the past two and a half days, but there were also some opportunities that we let get away from us. It’s a typical SEC meet. Every team is out there ‘all-in’ and laying it on the line. It’s fun stuff.”

Castillo, Martinez make the 100 butterfly podium
The Aggies put two swimmers on the podium for the first time since joining the SEC with senior Mauro Castillo and junior Angel Martinez teaming for a 2-3 finish the 100-yard butterfly. Castillo, the final qualifier out of the morning prelims, came roaring out of lane eight to grab second in 45.63 while lowering lifetime best by nearly a second and a half. It matched the highest SEC finish by an Aggie swimmer since joining the elite league in 2013. Martinez was right on his tail to grab the bronze in 46.69, which was also a lifetime best.

Holmes said, “It was a lot of fun to watch especially those two guys are such good friends. In a lot of ways, I don’t think they were that concerned about the rest of the field, they just wanted to beat each other. After the race, you could tell that Angel wasn’t happy and he primarily wasn’t happy because Mauro had beat him. Those two guys love competing against each other. Mauro was all-out from the word ‘go.’ Mauro probably isn’t our best swimmer, but he is our best racer.”

Van Overdam lowers 400 IM twice
Junior Austin Overdam lowered the school record in the 400-yard IM twice on Friday with a breakthrough time of 3:43.76 in the prelims and then he was even faster in the evening with a time of 3:43.35 while placing sixth. He took down the old record of 3:44.33 by Simon Frank at the 2014 SEC Championships. Sophomore teammate Ben Walkerchipped in an eighth place finish in 3:47.97.

Lifetime bests for Richardson in the 200 free
Junior Steven Richardson posted lifetime bests in the morning prelims and the evening finals as the placed fifth in the 200 freestyle consolation final (13th overall) in a time of 1:35.97. Richardson’s time makes the Aggies’ No. 5 all-time performer in the race.
