No. 1 Aggie Baseball Drops Finale at No. 12 Alabama

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

TUSCALOOSA – The No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team (35-5, 13-5) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as they dropped the series finale at No. 12 Alabama (25-15, 7-11), 10-9, from Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Freshman Gavin Grahovac led the Aggies offensively with a 2-for-5 performance to go along with a team-best four RBI. Ali Camarillo (2-for-5) and Hayden Schott (2-for-4) also registered multi-hit performances on the afternoon.

Freshman Kaiden Wilson suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Justin Lamkin earned a no-decision after allowing five runs in 1.2 innings of work.

After the Crimson Tide jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second behind a grand slam and sacrifice fly, the Aggies responded with a pair in the third to trim the deficit to 5-2. Grahovac plated the first run of the day for the Maroon & White with an RBI single through the left side and Jace LaViolette followed with a sac fly.

Alabama threatened to break the game open in the third as they loaded the bases with only one out but Josh Stewart was able to escape the jam with minimal damage as only one run came across to score on a sac fly.

In the fourth, the Aggies loaded the bases with two outs and pulled within one, 6-5, on a bases-clearing double off the bat of Grahovac. The three-run double pushed the freshman’s RBI total to 48 on the year.

After the Crimson Tide stretched their lead to 7-5 in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo homer, Texas A&M responded with a three-spot in the sixth to jump in front 8-7. Travis Chestnut plated Camarillo, who reached on a leadoff single, with an RBI triple to center before LaViolette belted a 3-2 fastball into the berm in right to give the Aggies their first lead of the day.

With the long ball, LaViolette became the first player in program history to reach 20 homers in back-to-back seasons.

Following a solo homer from Alabama in the sixth that evened the score at 8-8, the Aggies once again responded as Caden Sorrell gave his club the lead with a sac fly in the seventh.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom half of the frame as the Crimson Tide pushed across a pair of runs with a single to center to retake the lead for good, 10-9.
