New Pool Approved for Bryan’s Sadie Thomas Park

Two weeks ago, the Bryan city council set aside $1.5 million dollars in reserves with the goal of having all four swimming pools open this season.

The council was told Tuesday the estimated cost was nearly $7 million.

The council decided to replace the pool at Sadie Thomas Park, which was closed seven years ago, at an estimated cost of $950,000, and replace the perimeter gutter at the Bryan Aquatic Center, at an estimated cost of $450,000.

Consultant Travis Blazek told councilman Chuck Konderla the new Sadie Thomas pool does not include amenities.

The new pool, requested by neighborhood residents for several years, will be built in another area of the park. That will leave the remains of the existing pool that opened in 1957 and closed in 2008.

City Manager Kean Register says the goal remains to have the new Sadie Thomas pool opened this summer. The timing will be driven by designing the new pool and hiring a contractor.

Blazek said the new aquatic center gutter was necessary to remove contaminants from the pool water.

A lengthy list of remaining repairs and improvements recommended at the aquatic center and the pools at Henderson and Sue Haswell Parks won’t be done this year, but they will open and “limp along”.
