A local woman is getting a new home this month thanks to a new home repair coalition.
More than ten local governments and non-profit organizations offering home-repair services joined forces to create the Brazos County Home Repair Coalition.
Steve Godby, BCCHRC’s President, said two years ago, a Bryan woman asked Rebuilding Together for help repairing her manufactured home.
“As we looked at this house, we realized there are really no repairs that could make a difference,” said Godby.
The 37 year-old manufactured home had mold, mildew, rotten carpet and a poor electrical system.
“It needed to be replaced, so we were able to look as a coalition how we could help her and the best way was to replace this home,” said Godby.
The manufactured home, located on West MLK Jr. Street in Bryan, was demolished last week, and a new home will be built on the woman’s property later this month.
The new home will be built with $30,000 raised through Christ United Methodist Church. Additionally, more than 22 local businesses donated thousands of dollars worth of materials and labor for the new construction.
Godby said BCHRC’s goal is complete two home replacement projects each year.
“The BCHRC exists to use our resources and synchronize our efforts, and also to make it much easier for people that need home repairs to contact one point and get on a list where all the organizations can see the repairs,” said Godby.
BCHRC partners include the City of Bryan, City of College Station, B/CS Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together B/CS, Brazos Valley Center for Independent Living, Brazos Valley Affordable Housing Corporation, Elder-Aid, Area Agency on Aging, USDA-Rural Development, Brazos Health Resource Center, and Texas Ramp Project.
