New Chancellor Takes Over UT System

AUSTIN (AP) _ Dr. Francisco Cigarroa is about to take on what may be his toughest task ever.

Cigarroa is a pediatric transplant surgeon. He was expected to take over Monday as chancellor of the sprawling University of Texas System, which includes 15 campuses with more than 194,000 students.

With that job comes complaints about soaring tuition costs, a growing battle over admissions policies and a hurricane-ravaged medical school and health center in Galveston.

Cigarroa tells The Associated Press that challenges don’t dissuade him from pursuing important opportunities. And he sees opportunities.

Cigarroa isn’t talking in detail about his views on tuition restraints, but on the subject of admission policies he believes UT could keep a diverse student body even if the top 10 percent law is modified or eliminated.
