New Brazos County Detention Center Passes Inspection, Open House Set

Six years in the making, the new Brazos County Detention Center on Sandy Point Road is ready to receive inmates.

Sheriff Chris Kirk says state inspectors recently certified the $55 million dollar facility. Before prisoners are moved, there will be an open house Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. Tours will be available of the 139 thousand square foot campus designed to house 685 inmates.

Once 174 inmates are moved from the courthouse jail, the space will be remodeled in order to relieve a space crisis in other county departments.
