In the midst of legislative turmoil, St. Joseph’s Health System is welcoming the passage of a bill.
Media Coordinator Ashlea Sigman says House Bill 705, which was passed unanimously in both the Texas Senate and House, increases the penalties for those who attack hospital staff.
Sigman says the bill amends the term “emergency services personell,” so that assaults on hospital employees will now be treated with the same level of severity as assaults on police, firefighters, and paramedics; an assault will now count as a third degree felony instead of a simple class A misdemeanor
Sigman says a national survey by the Emergency Nurses Association found that one in ten nurses reported physical abuse at work over a seven day period, so the protection is especially meaningful.
