WACO, Texas (AP) _ A former Texas minister has been convicted of killing his wife whose death initially was ruled a suicide.
Jurors deliberated more than seven hours before returning their verdict Wednesday night in the murder trial of Matt Baker. He faces up to life in prison.
During closing arguments, prosecutor Susan Shafer said Baker, 38, had told a “web of lies” since his wife Kari’s 2006 death. Defense attorney Guy James Gray said the only reason Baker was on trial was because he had lied about an affair.
Baker has maintained that she killed herself because of a deep depression.
The verdict comes a day after Baker’s ex-mistress testified he told her how he drugged his wife, smothered her, then typed a suicide note and rubbed her lifeless hands over the paper.
