Men’s Tennis Tops San Diego, 4-1

COLLEGE STATION—Texas A&M senior Jeremy Efferding continued his hot start as part of the clinching doubles point tandem and his straight sets 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles to lead the No. 10 Texas A&M men’s tennis team to a 4-1 victory over No. 33 San Diego before a crowd of 206 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.

Texas A&M evens its record at 1-1 while USD falls to 0-2 in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

“This was important for us to get back on the courts and to get a victory,” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “The guys rebounded well. We’ve learned a lot this first weekend and we have lots of opportunities down the road. We need to work hard to improve but it’s good for the young guys to taste victory and record their first collegiate win.”

Efferding won all four matches, two doubles and two singles, this weekend.

“Jeremy is playing well and he understands we have three No. 1 players on this squad,” Denton added. “He dominated play this weekend as you would expect a senior to do.”

The Aggies, ranked No. 10 in the pre-season, got on the board first by virtue of winning the doubles point with the No. 3 team of A.J. Catanzariti and Arthur Rinderknech defeating the USD duo of Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek, 6-2. The doubles point was clinched at the No. 2 doubles where Efferding and Jordan Szabo defeated the USD tandem of Ciaran Fitzgerald and Uros Petronijevic, 6-4.

USD would tie the match at one with the first singles match at No. 1 going to Petronijevic, a 6-4, 6-1, winner over A&M’s Harrison Adams.

The Aggies would go back ahead with Efferding taking the 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over USD’s Romain Kalaydjian.

A&M would advance to 3-1 with freshman Catanzariti posting a 6-4, 6-2 win over Fitzgerald at No. 5 singles.

Another Aggie freshman would clinch the match with Rinderknech winning, 6-4, 6-4 over Angus.
