WACO, Texas (AP)– Freshman Johnathan Motley had 22 points and Baylor overcame a slow start to beat Texas A&M 77-63 on Tuesday night when the former Big 12 and Southwest Conference rivals played for the first time in three seasons.
Rico Gathers had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 11th career double-double at Baylor (8-1), which won its ninth straight home game.
Kourtney Roberson and Alex Robinson each had 11 points for the Aggies (6-2), who had won five in a row. They shot a season-best 58 percent (22 of 38), but were outrebounded 36-17.
This was the 206th meeting in the Battle of the Brazos, referring to the river that touches both college towns only about 90 miles apart. It is the second-longest played rivalry for both teams behind Texas, but hadn’t been played since Texas A&M left for the SEC after the 2011-12 season.
