Governor Abbott Says Crime Is Down For Third Straight Year

(AUSTIN, TX) — Governor Greg Abbott announced Friday that under his current term, the crime rate in Texas fell for the third consecutive year, according to new Uniform Crime Reporting data released by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The statewide rate dropped 13% in 2025. “Tough laws and strong law enforcement have reduced crime every year since 2023,” said Governor Abbott. “We passed the toughest bail reform package in state history, backed law enforcement, and targeted violent repeat offenders. Three straight years of lower crime prove those policies work, and Texans are safer because of them.” The statewide crime rate peaked in 2022 at 2,830.14 offenses per 100,000 people before falling for three consecutive years: 3.3% in 2023 8.2% in 2024 13% in 2025 Governor Abbott has made public safety a top priority. He’s signed into law the strongest bail reform package in Texas history, expanded resources for local law enforcement, and directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to target repeat violent offenders. The consistent decline in the crime rate reflects the results of those priorities and build on the Governor’s commitment to protecting law-abiding Texans by ensuring dangerous criminals remain behind bars where they belong.

14-Year-Old Killed, 3 Others Shot During Block Party Saturday Night Bryan

On Saturday night, Bryan Police were called to a street party in the 1200 block of West 17th Street just after 10:30pm. Officials say that shortly after officers arrived, they heard several gunshots and the crowd dispersed. Police found three victims at the scene, including 14-year-old D’Antwon Miles. He was shot in the torso and pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital. A 14-year-old female suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper leg. She was treated and released from St. Joseph Hospital. A 42-year-old female suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the buttock. She was admitted to St. Joseph Hospital and is listed in stable condition. A fourth victim was found nearby in the 1200 block of Lowery. The 17-year-old male was shot in the upper arm. He was treated and released from Baylor Scott and White Hospital. Two vehicles in the 1200 block of West 17th and one vehicle in the 900 block of Harlem Lane were struck by bullets fired during the altercation. Bryan Police Chief Dean Swartzlander said, “A 14-year-old lost his life and several others were injured as a result of this senseless act of violence. The Bryan Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of D’Antwon Miles during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are also with those who were injured, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy.” The preliminary investigation has revealed that two groups of individuals began shooting at each other on West 17th Street, but a motive for the shooting has not been determined. Bryan Police Detectives are committed to determining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identifying those responsible. It’s Back to School Week for Most Districts In The Brazos Valley

It’s back to school week! Most districts will return to classes this week, with the majority starting on Wednesday. Please remember to slow down when driving through school zones. Watch for school buses and do not pass them when their lights are flashing! The only time you can pass a school bus, is if that bus is in the opposite direction of traffic and there is a divided median.
