Another nail-biter, another Eli
Manning-engineered comeback, another New York Giants Super Bowl
title.
The Giants, executing another flawless fourth quarter rally,
climaxed their comeback season with a 21-17 victory over the New
England Patriots to win Super Bowl 46.
That gives the Giants their fourth Super Bowl title, and second
in four years. They also beat the Pats 17-14 in Super Bowl 42.
Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning once again one-upped Tom Brady in the
battle of Super Bowl quarterbacks. Seemingly with ice water in his
veins, Manning coolly directed the Giants on a game-winning
nine-play, 88-yard drive in the final minutes. That culminated with
an Ahmad Bradshaw’s 6-yard TD run with 57 seconds left. The big
play was a 38-yard completion to Mario Manningham. That sideline
catch was challenged by Pats coach Bill Belichick, but was not
overturned.
The Pats had one last desperation try, but Brady’s last Hail
Mary pass fell incomplete as this Super Bowl went down to the final
play.
The Giants raced out to an early a 9-0 lead. They ran 19 of the
first 20 offensive plays, scoring a touchdown and even their
defense scoring a safety when Brady was called for intentional
grounding in the end zone.
But Brady and the Pats regrouped, and scored the next 17 points.
Brady set a Super Bowl record by completing 16 straight passes,
breaking Joe Montana’s 1990 record.
The Giants are now 4-2 in Super Bowls.
The Patriots are 3-4 in seven appearances in the big game.
