Man Arrested for Knife Attack In College Station’s Northgate District

A College Station man who thought someone made an offensive remark at him is in jail on a charge of trying to stab the person who was directing the comment at his friend.

Four College Station police officers responded to the disturbance during the two o’clock hour Friday morning in the Northgate parking lot of Hurricane Harry’s.

According to the arrest report, a folding knife with a three inch blade was recovered.

22 year old Jon Thompson, who told officers he had consumed nine drinks, including two double rum and cokes prior to the incident, is held in lieu of a $50,000 dollar bond following his arrest on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to online records, this is the fourth time in two years Thompson has been in jail.

Last February, Thompson pleaded guilty to DWI and was sentenced to 60 days.

And in May, a local justice of the peace deferred punishment after Thompson pleaded no contest and was found guilty of public intoxication.

News release from College Station Police:

On October 4, 2019 at approximately 0219 hours, Officers responded to the 300 block of South College Ave for a report of a fight in progress involving a knife. When Officers arrived, two individuals were still fighting on the ground with several on-lookers. Officers separated the two fighting and detained them. The investigation revealed that two friends were walking in the parking lot and that one said a derogatory term to the other in a joking manner. A third party identified as Jon Thompson W/M 22 years of age, overheard the derogatory comment and mistakenly thought it was directed at him.

Thompson approached the two friends and confronted them about the comment, all the while holding an opened folding knife behind his back. Thompson attempted to start a fight with one of the friends over the comment and victim physically defended himself, by shoving the suspect to the ground. The fall dislodged the knife and the victim finally saw it. The suspect grabbed the knife and the victim then had to fight vigorously to ensure that the suspect did not use it against him. The victim successfully defended himself, knocking the knife away again and then continued to defend himself until police arrived.

The suspect was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault – Deadly Weapon.

Aggravated Assault – Deadly weapon is Felony of the 1st Degree. First Degree Felonies are punishable by confinement not to exceed 99 years or less than 5 years and a fine up to $10,000
