Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick issued a statement Wednesday morning about a news story released Tuesday night by the Austin American-Statesman about the University of Texas investigating a graduate student’s allegations of sexual misconduct against state senator Charles Schwertner.
The senator, who is running for re-election, represents Brazos, Robertson, Madison, Grimes, Walker, Leon, Freestone, Limestone, Milam, and Williamson counties.
According to the Statesman, a campaign spokesman for the senator issued a statement that says in part that Schwertner categorically denies any knowledge of the accusations.
The statement given to the Statesman goes on to say Schwertner is eager to cooperate with U-T’s investigation and hopes to make clear he played no part in the behavior described in the story.
Here is Lt. Governor Patrick’s statement:
“I am deeply concerned about the serious allegations reported in the Austin American-Statesman on September 25 regarding Sen. Charles Schwertner. I had no advance knowledge of the inquiry until I read about it in the news report.”
“I was also concerned yesterday to see that numerous University of Texas officials spoke to the media, potentially jeopardizing the integrity of a serious investigation. I am calling on the
university to complete their inquiry in a professional manner, protecting the privacy rights of both parties.”
“The Texas Senate is awaiting the conclusion of the investigation and expects a full report on this matter.”
