The day before the Texas A&M system board of regents approved a nearly $2 billion dollar operating budget for the flagship campus and Health Science Center next year, comes renewed criticism from Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick about recent tuition and fee increases.
Patrick told reporters during a Tuesday news conference in Austin that since 2003, median household income and the consumer price index rose 32 percent.
During the same period, Patrick said tuition and fees at all state supported universities increased by an average of 147 percent and the cost of administrators went up 149 percent.
By comparison, Patrick said the increase in overall management expenses was 72 percent and the increase in classroom expenses rose 62 percent.
At Texas A&M, Patrick said the school reported tuition and fees increased 97 percent.
Patrick says with all the additional money, student outcomes have not made a dramatic change. He said the graduation rate during the same time frame statewide increased between six and seven percent and fewer than 50 percent of students are graduating in less than six years.
